Spartans ready for another playoff run

After 46 straight wins and a third straight 8-0 season, it's hard to imagine that the Maine-Endwell Spartans have "unfinished business," but they do.  Usually a team with unfinished business is looking to make up for a disappointment the year before.  There haven't been many disappointments for M-E in recent memory, but this year the Spartans unfinished business is simply to do it all again.  Five more wins stand in the way of M-E and an unprecedented four straight NYSPHSAA Titles.  Five.

As they gear up for the Section IV Semifinals against the Susquehanna Valley Sabers, the Spartans look to be playing their best football of the season.  A Week 6 win over Chenango Forks, a Week 8 win over Elmira, in fact, their last three wins (JC in Week 7) have come against playoff bound teams.  Including U-E, which finished 2-6 and had an automatic bid into the Section IV Class A Finals from Week 1, six of the eight teams the Spartans faced are playoff teams and they outscored those opponents by 158 points.

The Sabers are all too familiar with the Spartans as M-E got the best of the Week 2 battle, 27-14.  Although, that was a much better outcome than the previous two meetings: a 69-0 M-E win a year ago, and a 71-0 M-E win the year before.  Admittedly, this is a much different Sabers team.

Better opponent or not, the Spartans know that their key to victory flows through their offense and junior quarterback Kyle Balmer.

Kickoff scheduled for Saturday at 7:00 at Maine-Endwell.
