Candor Indians also bitten by injury bug

The Candor Indians join the Whitney Point Golden Eagles in the forfeit loss column as several injuries prevent them from being able to field a team for Friday's game.  Candor was scheduled to play at Elmira Notre Dame.

Candor forfeited Week 4's match up in Oxford in with 7:00 left in the 4th quarter due to injuries, so it was widely speculated that Week 5 might result in a forfeit as well.

Candor is 1-4 after the forfeit, Elmira Notre Dame will be 4-1.

The Chenango Forks Blue Devils suddenly find themselves with a bye week in Week 5 as the Whitney Point Golden Eagles are unable to field a team for Saturday's game.  The Whitney Point administration informed the Section late Monday night that, after several injuries, they were shy of the 16 players required to dress for a game.

After the forfeit, the Golden Eagles are 0-5.  The Blue Devils are 4-1.  No word yet on if Week 6 and onward is in jeopardy for Whitney Point.

Blue Devils not overlooking rebounding Trojans

The Chenango Forks Blue Devils easily dispatched the Sidney Warriors 56-0 in Week 3, but in Week 4 have another tough match up against a Greene Trojans team that has rebounded from a few bad years.

In 2013, Greene went 3-5, then 4-5 a year ago.  Already in 2015, the Trojans have a 2-1 record and are the 24th ranked team in the State.  Reminiscent of what the Trojans were just a few years ago, it's a tough task for the Blue Devils, but don't expect Dave Hogan's boys to not bring their usual thunder.

"We need another good week of practice, work hard.  We know they're a good team," said Cody Lamond, Forks senior RB/DB.  "We can't go into it lightly, so we have to work hard, get prepared well.  Our coaches will do a good job of that.  And we just got to do our jobs."

"We already said we're going to be in for a good battle," Hogan said.  "That's a good ball team, we watched them last week and watched them [Friday] night and they're going to be tough and we know they're going to come to play."

Forks hosts Greene Saturday at 1:30.

M-E looking forward to divisional bout with Vestal

The Maine-Endwell Spartans survived a one possession game in their Week 2 win over Chenango Forks before cruising past Susquehanna Valley in Week 3, but Week 4 represents another tough task.  The 3-0 Spartans travel to Vestal to take on the 3-0 Golden Bears.  M-E is ranked first in the state in Class A, Vestal 7th.  Both have impressive scoring differentials with the Golden bears outscoring opponents by 40 points, while M-E has done so at a more impressive 110 points.

On paper, the edge may belong to the Spartans, but as you've come to expect from a team coached by Matt Gallagher, no opponent can be overlooked.

"They're a good team, we've seen them play," said Senior RB/CB Drew Gallagher.  "It should be a good game and we're ready for the task and hopefully we come out on top."

"It's great.  It's going to be a great atmosphere over there," said Head Coach Matt Gallagher.  "We're both 3-0 and it's a divisional game, so we're going to be prepared.  It's a short week for us so we've got to get going on Monday and get ready for Friday."

Kickoff from Vestal's Dick Hoover Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 Friday night.

Forks pleased with total team win

The plus side to the 56-0 win over Sidney for Chenango Forks was Head Coach Dave Hogan's ability to use his entire roster.  There's a two-fold benefit to this: resting your starters and preventing injuries while giving your reserves valuable game experience that might become necessary in the later weeks of the season.

Forks hosts Greene in Week 4.

Spartans, Sabers prepare for another entertaining clash

The Maine-Endwell Spartans beat their opponents last year by an average of 24.1 points and beat Section IV opponents by an average of 26.2 points.  Yet, despite winning their 4th straight state title and their 51st straight win by season's end, Susquehanna Valley gave the Spartans two of their toughest games.

In Week 2 of the regular season, M-E beat SV 27-14 before beating the Sabers again in the Section IV Class B semis by a narrow 13-6.  M-E's margin of victory over SV last year, just 10 points.

While the Spartans blew away Corning in Week 1 this year for a NYS record 52nd straight win and then a 28-21 win over Two-Time Defending Class B State Champion Chenango Forks in Week 2, their Week 3 matchup against the Sabers is no easy task.

"They played us tough twice last year so I assume they're going to play us tough again this year," said Michael Palmer, M-E Senior WR/DB.  "We're definitely doing to need a good week of practice again and get after it on Saturday afternoon."

"They gave us two of our tougher games last year," said Spartans Head Coach Matt Gallagher.  "We know our schedule is tough and challenging, but I don't think we'd want it any other way, so we're going to be ready for SV."

But for the Sabers, after such a narrow defeat in last year's section semis, there would be nothing sweeter than putting an end to M-E's historic run.  But to do that, it'll take a hard week of practice.

"It's M-E, they're just another team, that's all we look at it as.  Just got to get faster, get off the ball harder and just do our jobs," said SV Senior RB/DB Kyle Novobilski.

"We obviously got to be very focused in practice this week.  Maine-Endwell, their record speaks for itself, so we just got to buckle up and be really focused next week," said Sabers Head Coach Mike Ford.

Kickoff between the Sabers and Spartans is set for 1:30 on Saturday at Susquehanna Valley.

4th and Goal - Week Two: Play and Hit of the Week

Here is the best play and the biggest hit from Week Two of the High School Football Season in Section IV on our show 4th and Goal.

Game of the Week - Week Two: Maine-Endwell continues streak and holds off Forks 28-21

On Saturday, the Maine-Endwell Spartans traveled to the land of the Forks for another match-up of two state champions playing in a regular season contest. M-E jumped out to a 14-0 lead at half and even 21-0 in the third quarter but Forks crawled back to make it a one score game before the Spartans defense held off the Blue Devils with a 28-21 victory.

Spartans happy having escaped early test

The Maine-Endwell Spartans put their now 53-game win streak to the test in Week 2 as they took on two-time defending Class B State Champion Chenango Forks.  Early in the third quarter the game looked to be in the bag for M-E after Michael Palmer returned an interception for a touchdown to make it 21-0.  But the Blue Devils stormed back and made it a one possession game in the 4th before, ultimately, the Spartans held on to win 28-21.

While a win is a win, some wins feel better than others, and this is one of those, proving that the Spartans can survive just about anything.

"I like the fact that we were able to do what we were able to very early on and then also fight off some adversity," said M-E Head Coach Matt Gallagher.  "It was almost a tale of two halves as they say.  But I like the fact that we were able to get up on them quickly and then also fight them off at the end, so I think it was a great game for us."

M-E travels to Susquehanna Valley in Week 3.  The Spartans beat the Sabers twice last year, once in the regular season 27-14 and then again in the postseason 13-6.

Patriots still with room to improve despite Week 1 success

The Binghamton Patriots got off to a hot start to the season thanks to a big second half in a 42-20 win over Auburn in Week 1.  While that success washes away some of the memories of last year's struggles, there are still things the Patriots hope to improve upon in Week 2.

"Again, just being sharp," said Patriots Head Coach Mike Ramil.  "We had some miscues a couple times on the offensive line.  Getting guys to run north and south and if you have a tackle, make the tackle."

"Tackling, tackling.  We had guys in the right position sometimes and got the tackles broken, but we did swarm very well," said Mathias Silberstein, Senior OL.  "Our defense did a lot better than last year, very improved and tempo on our offense."

The Patriots travel to Horseheads for a Saturday afternoon matchup in Week 2.

Newfield beats Candor in overtime

Candor hosted Newfield in an unorthodox Wednesday night battle.  The two teams were scoreless at halftime, but had an exciting finish brewing as the Trojans took down the host Indians 14-8 in overtime.

A Rematch of Epic Proportions

Last season, it took until Week 7 for the long awaited match up of defending state champions to thrill a sold out crowd.  This year, once again defending state champs, Maine-Endwell and Chenango Forks will face off in Week 2.  Both teams are coming off massive wins, M-E 54-7 over Corning, Forks 55-8 over Oneonta.

While these teams remain relatively untested compared to their matchup a year ago, the Spartans are excited for another go around.

"It was a fun game last year, should be fun game this year, they're a good team, defending state champs. Should be a good game," said M-E QB/DB Kyle Balmer.

"It's going to be a lot fun.  Just like last year I think it's great for the area it's great for football it's great for us.  These guys are going to get up for it after something like this reaching this milestone and then knowing that you can't get down because you have to go against the two time defending state champions," said M-E Head Coach Matt Gallagher.

M-E won last year's battle at home.  This year, Forks plays host and looks to turn the tables on Saturday at 1:00.

Fox 40 Goes to Camp: Teamwork makes the dream work

After back-to-back Section IV Class AA Titles in 2011 and 2012, the Binghamton Patriots have seen the Elmira Express and Corning Hawks sneak in to claim the titles the last two years.  Last year's Patriots went a disappointing, by BHS standards, 4-5.  It was a year that Patriots fans were frustrated with, seeing a lot of talented individuals on the field, but no real sense of teamwork.  This year, that's changed.

This year's Patriots squad is led by more than 20 seniors joined by several younger players thirsty to prove themselves at the varsity level.  While last year's team relied in the talent of the individual, this year's is all about teamwork.

"This year's seniors, we're really coming together and we're making sure our younger players are stepping up and we're making sure we're all just molded as one.  It's not an individual thing, it's a team thing," said Senior Linebacker Vincent Dell'Arciprete.

"Teamwork is key," said Head Coach Mike Ramil.  "In football, if you're not playing together as a team and you're relying on just specific individuals, it's not going to work out as well as you want.  Kids are going to get injured and you're not really meshing as a team.  This year these guys are really focused on the teamwork aspect of the game and I think we're going to compete at a much higher level because of that."

Binghamton begins the season in the Carrier Dome against Auburn on Saturday at 11:00 am.

Fox 40 Goes to Camp: Return to the Postseason

The Seton Catholic Central Saints shocked Walton, in Walton, in the first round of the playoffs last year, so it's almost poetic that this year they open the season, on the road, in Walton.  This Saints team looks vastly different than last year's.  For one, there's more of them.  Head Coach Brian Mister said of last year's team, it was easier to count the bench than the players on the field to know they had 11 guys out there.  This year, he said after a few players are medically cleared, they'll be up to 22 on the roster.  However, a lot of those faces are new.

The Saints lose almost all of their offensive weapons from last year including the Whitman twins, Dan O'Brien, and Sam Crowley to graduation, they do return QB John Giangreco and several lineman.  While those new guys will have big shoes to fill (both figuratively and literally), they seem up to the task and ready to return to the postseason and make Seton a football school once again.

"I think it's huge because last year we had a great season and we have high expectations to do the same again this year," Giangreco said.  "We have a lot of new kids that are willing to put in the work that we did last year."

"The kids have been working hard.  That's one thing I can't complain about," Mister said.  "They're all here, they're always here, they're working hard and busting their butts.  They know that in order to be successful they're going to have to be non-stop out there, iron man the whole game."

Seton travels to Walton on Saturday afternoon for Week One.
